KNEE ARTHRITIS - Bone marrow stimulation :

Do I have to find a new sport after microfracture? - - Posted by GregM (GregM), 14 January 2005

Hi,

On the 2nd of August 2004 I had microfracture to repair a 25 x 15mm full thickness chondral defect with unstable margins in the central part of the trochlea articular surface.

I am now considering a return to my sport -
Jiu Jitsu, which is primarily a ground grappling style which means a lot of time is spent on your knees.

Will I be able to train in a sport such as this for the long term (10+ years) or would I be better to take up boxing again? I make no living from my sport and it also is pretty expensive so I dont want to have a lifetime of knee problems for 3 years worth of training.

For examples on the sorts of positions required in Jiu Jitsu - http://bjj.org/techniques/

All advice is much appreciated.

Thanks

Greg

I have had 2 microfractures of the medial femoral chondyle and can no longer kneel at all. It is incredibly painful if I try. You may do better if yours is not a heavy weight bearing spot but mine is soooooooo, I couldnt do it. Your best bet is to ask your OS.
good luck
missy
