KNEE ARTHRITIS - Autologous chondrocyte implantation (A.C.I.) :

different ACI rehab protocols? - - Posted by ergomaniac (ergomaniac), 26 April 2003

I'm interested in finding out more information about the differences in rehab protocols for autologous chondrocyte implantation. There seems to be quite a range of opinions between OS's as to the amount of weightbearing post op. Some say none for 8 week, some cast the knee in POP, others brace and allow some partial weight bearing.

I'm just trying to get a handle on what is the 'usual' or 'preferred' rehab program so anyone who can help out please let me know.

I think the protocol varies depending on where the defect is located--whether it's a weight-bearing area and how much weight is born throughout the range of motion.  That's why it's necessary to discuss this with the doctor in question.

Try going to www.google.com and looking up 'carticel and rehabilitation.'  I found a great article on the Swedish experience with ACI that had by far the most comprehensive rehab protocols--again, they varied drastically depending on the location of the defect.

Good luck.

with mine i was full weight bearing as soon as i got up from bed 2 days after op
had back slab cast for ten days and was told to use it weight bearing on crutches
now have no cast or brace just my leg and crutches for 6 weeks
loads of exercise at moment to try and get it bending again and some strength back in it
