First, I applaud you for getting yourself moving. Being overweight is an added stress to your knees and exercise should help you lose some weight. But the combination of jogging and the extra weight may too much for your knees. Why not cut back on the jogging and see if it improves? Try walking instead. You may even need to stop for a while, treating the pain with rest, ice, elevation (if there is swelling), and some Advil (or something like it). And make sure you stretch before you walk. If the pain continues, you should probably see a doctor. I think it's way too early to be thinking you may need surgery.

Running is bad for your knees even if you're normal weight. If you're having pain then you need to find an alternate form of exercise. Biking and swimming are excellent alternatives and much easier on the knees.

Being overweight can really add to knee problems and accelerate the symptoms of arthritis. I agree with the suggestion about backing off of the running and getting movement in through walking, while you work on getting ypur weight at a good level.
The creaking sounds do not necessarily mean that it is arthritis either--but in conjunction with pain, it could mean that something is going on. If you have not had a physical and discussed this, I'd like to suggest that you do so. I started feeling knee pain around my 40th birthday--haqd been overweight my entire life. I "put up" with it and "put up" with it until I turned 45 and could no longer stand it. I saw an OS, was diagnosed with OA--and had the first of some 25 injections and 5 surgeries to date. In the meantime, I finally got in gear and lost some weight (138 pounds...) but the damage was done. I just had the first tkr and am waiting for a date for the other, at age 47. By all accounts, I am "too young to have this."
I wish that I would have gotten care for it much sooner than I did and lost weight a lot sooner than I did and maybe, just maybe--I wouldn't be in the shape I'm in right now. Good luck, Sylvia
