Bone breaks around the knee :
15 Year Old Athlete (Knee Fracture) - - Posted by faith21 (faith21), 16 December 2004
My 15 yr old son fractured his knee 1 month ago. His injury did not require surgery. His knee was placed in an immobilizer. He has been allowed to put pressure on the leg, but still wears the brace.
The injury occured in his growth plate in the the knee.
The doctor stated his bone has lined back up perfectly and he might be able to start bending the knee in a few weeks.
Has anyone out there had this type of injury?
How long is the recovery time?
Will physical therapy be required?
How long before he can resume normal activities (sports-basketball and baseball)?

hey faith,
my name is Chris and I am also 15. I broke my knee (patella) about 6 weeks ago while wrestling. I dislocated it and when it cam eback it chipped the patella. I also do not require surgery and i am in a full leg cast and can walk without any pain on the completely immobile knee. I also tore my ACL in my other knee and it took me about 4 weeks after it without surgeyr to get my knee bending again. Without surgery and being religious about my PT (physical therapy) the doctor said I will be able to play football again in the fall and wrestling in the winter. If your son can walk on it now, and if he is able to bend it within a few weeks, he'll be able to walk within no time. His knee with me atrophied (loss of muscle) and he will definately want to work those quads and muscles around the knee to make it extra stable. If his knee is starting to pop or feel like it's moving around when it shouldn't be like when walking or turning, i would definately cut his activities short for a while and starting doing more leg excersizes cause there is nothign worse than a swollen unstable knee. you definately doni't want him to dislocate it cause that is really not fun
I wish you the best, and I woudl definately ask the Doctor about any of the questions you have. Just write them down so you don't forget, because he'd give you the best advice. Good luck!
Chris
