Slow Healing MCL Sprain - - Posted by Jzarnoch (ZeesKnee), 28 March 2003

Hi there,
I injured my knee about  3 months ago.  When I finally got to an ortho to have it diagnosed, he said I had a level 1 sprain in my MCL.

This was followed with rest, ice, a brace and celebrex (ugh).  In my follow up appointment he decided that I needed a Cortisone shot to deal with some residual swelling in the joint (an MRI ruled out other concerns and surgery).  He has since directed me to continue my exercise program, ice after workouts, and generally says that I only need to wear the brace during major activity.

The problem?  I am still having pain in the area (especially after i'm on my feet for a while), and there still seems to be some swelling.  Does anyone have experience with this?  It seems like a sprain should be healing faster.  Also, any exercises specific to rehabing this kind of injury would be great.

Cheers!

Hi ZeesKnees, welcome to knee geeks. I think you need to give yourself more time to heal, are you following the Doctors orders with ice, meds and exercise? The pain and swelling you mention is your knee telling you it's not healed yet, take it easy, pay attention to your pain and swelling and gradually increase things over the next 3 months as you get better. I know you said you have to wear a brace during major activity, that tells me you are used to being active, so it won't be easy for you to go light. Keep seeing your Doctor as needed. Theresa
