KNEE ARTHRITIS - Total Knee Replacement :
Post-op issues with a tkr - - Posted by enuff81020 (enuff81020), 13 August 2003
Hi--
Before my first tkr and again before this one, my os sat me down and talked about potential problems. The two biggest concerns he had included the possibility of infection and the possibility of blood clots. My os attacks those issues very aggressively. lots of antibiotics to ward off infection--and a whole round of preventatives on the blood clots (a boot for my leg after surgery, coumadin therapy, ted hose--for 6 weeks at least...)
the third possible complication however, has come home....my knee is stuck and will not straighten--the bend is coming but it willnot straighten. It has been a really tough 4 weeks--and tomorrow, I'm going back in the hospital for a manipulation, significant help with pain management and round the clock physical therapy to get this thing doing its job.
I guess with all of the procedures that I've had, I never expected any of the complications to come home to me. I'm certain that we will get this managed, but it is important to pay attention to those conversations prior to surgery wo that we understand what could come to be.
