Synvisc - - Posted by Stacey (Stacey), 18 August 2003
Hi Everyone
One outcome of my recent OS appt was that pretty much the only thing he could offer me was Synvisc injections (besides glucosamine which I dont think is going to make that drastic of relief enough for me to not realize my knee is still much in pain). I have been doing a little research on them and have found that they have about a 40% chance of working but can also cause more pain. I have read that they are mainly for OA but I dont have OA so where does that leave me? These are not cheap shots and will result in me missing at least 3 classes (which being in fourth year of an honours program is not good!). So I have a few questions for all of you:
Has anyone on here had Synvisc injections?
Did they work for you?
How much relief did you recieve?
Do you have OA?
Thanks in advance

I take glucosamine (3 grams or 3,000 mg's) and don't have OA.
We are more prone to OA than the general public due to the extra wear and tear our joints get.
Glucosamine is supposed to help in repair and health of carliage and as ours gets damaged more often from joints that move too far and from frequent injuries then I personally think it is something that is worth taking, but on the other hand it hasn't really helped MY pain but then I am ME and not YOU.
As to the injections I have NEVER had them and do not know what effect they would have on you, your joints or your immune system/collagen etc (I don't even know what the injections are for or do (I am assuming they are for cartliage problems like CMP and breakdown of meniscus etc
).

Hi Sharon
Synvisc is a synovial fluid replacement / regenerator type of thing. It is supposed to alleviate the pain of OA. This is why I am wondering if it would be beneficial to my condition. I am keeping up on my glucosamine (1500 mg as that is what the bottle says). Thank you for your reply
