KNEE ARTHRITIS - Autologous chondrocyte implantation (A.C.I.) :

Golf Buggy's are unsafe - - Posted by daveware (daveware), 11 December 2004

haha I feel like I've just joined the ranks of the damned knee brigade or something. At 22 I've just had an MACI done and i'm about 1 1/2 weeks post op and was feeling good pretty much no pain and was stoked with how things were going....until......in an attempt to not remain confined to my house I borrowed my grandads golf buggy to go to the shops, only to later misjudge a curb and fall out. I landed heavily on my newly operated on knee. Now the pain has started, its not overbearing but the sharp throbbing is enough to cause discomfort. My concern is I've just stuffed the implant and may have to start again, i'm clinging to hope that the pain is only from stirring up the knee after the impact and the implant is still intact but my gut feeling is that its not all good. I was wondering if anyone else has been in the same situation and what their outcome was. I'll be going to contact my doc first thing monday anyway but still worried just the same

Hi Welcome to our brigade,
I don't know if you have done any damage, but I know that many have had falls post ACI/MACI, including myself, but not as badly as your fall, and that I have been informed that as long as you didn't really twist it then it should be fine, but it depends how you landed on it, as I assume your knee was bent at the time.
I think you are doing the right thing and contact you OS, even if to put your mind at rest, but my guess, it will be a watch and wait situation, time will tell. When I fell onto my non-weight bearing leg, it really hurt, and I felt sick, I was so worried, and the knee ached alot the next day, but it wore off within a couple of days, and others reassured me, but please check with your OS, sounds like a bad fall.
Hope everything works out for you.
Kind regards
Jules

Sorry to hear that you fell!!! What a way to fall OUCH  Cry

I was  2 weeks post op when my jack a** dog tripped me and I jammed straight down on my graft leg(I had a synthetic graft used to mimic ACI. This was so I did not have to wait for the graft to grow) I had huge swelling and moderate pain and it turned out my graft was ok.  Hope this gives ya a bit of hope. I would still mention it to your OS though.

My OS said the same thing as Jules that most of the time with a fall you should be ok as long as there was no extreme twisting.

Best of luck to you at the OS let us know what happens

Thanks for your replies it's giving me some glimmer of hope.

The pain has subsided slightly and there wasn't any swelling so I guess that is a good sign.

I see the doc tomorrow to face the truth.

Heres hoping......

I'll have my fingers crossed for you!!!

Good Luck

Those crossed fingers must of done something.

Just got back from the docs. He didn't really take much of a look... bent it a few times found some fluid and and gave me the "she'll be right mate". He said I should be able to feel it if it did come loose and that there would be a considerable amount of swelling and the rest if it was the case.

So....on with this buggery of a rehab, exaclty 2 weeks in how many more to go? haha

....and I'll have to start taking it a bit easier in the buggy aswell I think.

Hi Daveware,

Glad to hear things are ok for you. As I said before I work with doctors/consultants, and one of their main lines are is see how it goes, and rightly so in many cases! But I pleased everything went ok for you. I've had a few slight tumbles, and expect to have a few more before my rehabs finished. I started partial weight bearing today, not putting too much weight on it, and its tingling, but feels great to have two feet back on the floor.
merry xmas to all and have a good new year.
Jules
