HTO - MARVELLOUS - - Posted by dsf (dsf), 1 September 2004
Just read through some reports and thought I'd just post quickly that after having a Osteotomy on my right leg last september and an ACL reconstruction and HTO plate and screws taken out in January yhis year things have been great.
Recovery was painful to start with ! crutches clide on wet tiles was a painful way to do I was equipped to do the splits especially with 30 plus staples in my skin and a newly if professionally sawn through Tibia.
The next months were slow but I am now for the first time able to out run my kids - admittedly still in a straight line. And kick a football past them.
I have to say thanks to my GP for sending me to the consultant in the first place and to the consultant himself for his work..even after his initial line 'of I thinkl something radical is needed here!'
good luck to everyone going through this and worse! for me it got better!
of course I am told the knee will eventually fail again and I will neeed a knee replacement..
c'est la vie

My HTO has been great. Surgery was Nov. 03 and I was back refereeing soccer by mid-March of this year. THisfall have done college and comptitive men's matches and other than some swelling and pain the knee functions very well. I am considering hardware removal but at this point don't want another surgery. How much difference did the hardware removeal make for you in terms of pain?

Jim
Difficult to say as it was always the plan to remove it and will still quite sore when removed. So I guess all I can say is what the pain is like now.
The front of my shin from just below the knee to for about three of 4 inches has a 'fizzy' feeling. Hard to put into words not so much pain or even uncomfortable just you aware of the sensation. If I take a knock on it hurts and the sensation spreads but its not agony (although havent taken a whack on it!!)
I can kneel on a hard surface but would stay there for two long.
It does feel to me like it is still healing.
As an aside I have been doing a bit more running and had to back track as some of the original pain was recurring, but that more to do with the knee joint rather than where the metal work was installed and removed.
Understand the lack of willingness to go back for surgery! sorry I cant give a better comparison.
