Reaction to Glucosamine Sulphate - - Posted by Donna68 (Donna68), 22 June 2004

Does anyone know of an alternative to taking Glucosomine?
I bought some from H&B last year but after a few days I came out in a rash so discontinued use.

Donna68,

It may be from the shellfish ingredients....  Check the bottle, and see if there is a shellfish warning - there usually always is....

I know that MSM is the alternative to Glucosamine - and is recommended for people that have a reaction to Glucosamine products....

I myself take Glucosamine/MSM, but might be switching to just MSM for the same reason....

You may be reacting to the sulfa too... I am allergic to sulfas (I also break out in a rash) but there are two types of glucosamine...

"Those who are allergic to sulfates may take glucosamine hydrochloride and not glucosamine sulfate, and they should avoid chondroitin sulfate. Glucosamine is derived from shrimp, oyster and crab shells and chondroitin is derived from cartilage of cows, pigs, and sharks. There is no synthetically made glucosamine on the market."   <http://www.raysahelian.com/glucosamine.html>

If I understand correctly, MSM also contains sulfa.

Wow!  If you read back some postings ago, I put a question on this site about reactions to Glucosamine/Chondroitin.  I actually went into full-blown PMS and had a nasty attitude change.  I asked several doctors about this and all of them thought I was nuts.  I told them I tried this twice - same results.

Well, I AM allergic to sulfa drugs.  I just wish more docs would realize that telling patients to take this ALL NATURALLY OCCURRING pill might cause problems.  I did not know this and am thankful for this information.

Scary - a severe reaction to sulfa drugs can cause kidney failure.

Thanks for the info!  Very much!!!
