Meniscus tear v.s Plica syndrome - - Posted by kneefix (kneefix), 17 December 2004
Had arthroscopy last week. Have very small stable tear 3-4mm inferior medial meniscus. Had scar tissue removed from medial plica. Doc says meniscus tear should give no problems, and only if in deep squat. I think I had plica syndrome. Plica syndrome causes signs and symptoms of meniscus tear. Plica syndrome can start after an injury to the knee. I dodged a bullet here. Doc said I'm cleared for full go ahead in sports as soon as I recouperate from surgery. I'm getting better every day. No more clicking and popping and besides surgery after effects no more pain. Anyone had Plica syndrome?

Ok, first off I want to say I'm not a doctor. Most of the stuff I know about knees I found out about by doing searches on the internet. The doctor told me he took scar tissue from the Plica. So I did a search "plica scar tissue and came up with this. Some people have a plica, some do not. It is left over tissue from the capsule that your knee forms in during developlement in the womb. A knee injury can cause the Plica to become irritated and can interfere with the joint. After an injury the Plica can form scar tissue that can further interfere with the joint. Symptoms are the same as a meniscus tear or platoral femeral syndrom (spell). Some people can fix it with R.I.C.E or cortizon (spell) injections. Some need surgery to have the Plica removed. If you have had Arthoscopy surgey the doc looks to see if you have "scar tissue" in your Plica.

I am waiting surgery in the new year. The injury has been very hard to handle ane am unable to stand have a great deal of pain. Contues to lock and the kee cap hurts as does the inside of my knee all the way along my MCL. Have been told that I have torn medial Miscus with a torn MCL. How do you handle pain after exercise and also when sleeping. Want something other than top end pain killers. HELP PLEASE?

I sleep on the couch now. I found that the comforter on the bed was too heavy, and would apply pressure on my foot when I would turn in my sleep. The pressure made my knee hurt, and would wake me up. It got worse when the weather got cold and my wife put the electric blanket on the bed as well. So, I sleep on the couch, with a smaller blanket that isn't heavy. It's been a bit difficult because I normally toss and turn a lot, but I've been doing a good job of staying on my back all night.
As far as exercise, I was advised to only bike after I was injured. Other than the first time, biking really didn't hurt.
