Overuse problems of the knee :

Stretching problem with ilio-tibial band syndrome - - Posted by cat (cat), 2 April 2003

Smiley Hi,
This  ?  is for those lucky enough to have had ITBS problems and are aquainted with the "Ober" stretch. Does it hurt the medial part of your knee when you have had it done?  Sometimes it just kills mine and I wondered if that was normal.
TIA,
cat Grin

It could hurt if you have some type of medial compartment pathology.  Have  the person stretching you stabilize the medial aspect of your knee and see if this helps.  Also try extending more at the hip and flexing at the knee, then have your leg passively adducted.   I find that this is often more effective.

I love the Ober stretch!   But I would occasionally get a pull in the medial aspect of the knee.  Usually, I'd tell the PT and he/she would lower the ankle so that the lower leg was parallel to the table.  If they crank the ankle up and push the knee down a little, I could get a more intense stretch--but sometimes pain on the medial side of the knee.

Smiley Well, I wouldn't exactly say I love the Ober (more a love - hate thing, love it when it's over), but it has helped! Thanx for the replies,

I think this is what my mom is soposed to be doing to me, but she can not get it right and my pt dose not do it the way my OS wants it done.  I was wondering if anyone knew of a web site where there were step by step instructions or somthing that i could show my mom??  If u could help that would be great!  THANKS!

Check out this website.  This shows the Ober's test, for the stretch have your mom adduct your leg until you feel a stretch.

Smiley  Hi,
You can try this site
http://www.nismat.org/ptcor/itb_stretch/

I have had several different PTs do this stretch with me and have found some more effective than others. Some folks are just not strong enough for me to feel much of a stretch.

Smiley Hey,
Ready for a vocab lesson? There will be a test later. Hehe.

Adduction- movement toward the midline of the body
Abduction- movement away from the midline of the body

I lay on my "good" side with my "good" knee bent and the PT stands behind me. My upper knee is bent, the PT abducts the upper limb (pulls it back away from the mid of the body) and then presses down. I might add that he does this with one hand while the other hand is pushing on my hip so I'm not rolling around. I really think it might go easier if he had a third hand or maybe used his foot. Anyway it gives us both a workout!

Hope this helps,
