KNEE ARTHRITIS - Total Knee Replacement :

Knee replacement with pseudomonas complication - - Posted by barbaraesd (barbaraesd), 1 March 2003

I have been in and out of hospital since october. i had right knee replaced and then suffered infection. I was in hospital, rehab and had many courses of antibiotics through a port. I had to have more surgery because i couldn't walk. They discovered that the muscle was not attached to the new knee. When they did the surgery they found that infectionhad eaten through part of tendon. I had surgery this past week and they have now put in a cement spacer filled with antibiotics. One of the infections is pseodomonas.

The original surgeon says he will wait six weeks and then do another knee replacement. His associate says that once you have pseudomonas in that area you can no longer have a knee replacement just a fusion.

Does anyone know the answer or direct me where I can get more information.

I am very discouraged

Hi Barbara,

Welcome aboard...

I had a tkr in December and am looking at doing the other in July.  Can you tell me about your situation?  Arthritis is my problem.  Did your doc do anything with antibiotics before your surgery?  Mine did before, during, and after--lots after...He told me that the two biggest possible problems were infections and blood clots and went at both pretty aggressively.  (or so I thought...)

I am sure sorry to hear of your problems.  I understand the infection can be really painful.  Take care, Sylvia
