Overuse problems of the knee :

Knee problems again - - Posted by dtmkemp (dtmkemp), 12 March 2004

Hi,
I have been recently (again) been having sharp pain in my left knee below my kneecap. The first time I noticed it was about 15 years ago, when I was in Jr. High. I was at that time diagnosed with Osgood-Schlatters desease. Periodically, throughout the years I have had the same pain in my knee during strenouse excercise when my knee is engaged. Sometimes it comes back pretty bad. I am absolutly sure that it is the same pain although I have recently read up about this condition and it looks as though this is something you have when you are very young. Is it possible I still have this condition? I am now 27 and have again been starting to work out pretty regularly and am getting this same pain again, should I see a doc or is it probably the same problem? I know this isn't a serious problem, but it does cause some real pain!! Any tips could help.Thanks.

Just to describe the pain, it is a real sharp pain under the left side of my left kneecap (As long as I do not continue to work the knee the pain does not get too bad). I do not have it all the time. But once it starts (from excercising or putting too much weight on it) , I can not easily get rid of it. It usually gets bad when I am directly engaging it by bending my knee to an extreme, kneeling on my knees, or strtching it out sometimes. I can feel the point where I am going to bend and cause it too hurt. It doesn't actually pop but it feels like a slight bump as I pass that point. It does not hurt when I slightly or normaly use it, (for example walking or going up stairs) unless I have caused the pain to come back. It actually even hurts on a cetain spot on top of the left kneecap when I push on it with my finger.  If it gets bad, then sometimes it hurts to do normal things. I know this is probably not serious, although it is painful and I could use a little help. I have recently started excercising (I use both pilates and Tai-bo) and do not want to put in too many days of rest as too knock me off my routine. Funny enough, the lower impact pilates has a couple stretches that actually cause my knee too really hurt where the Tae-bo doesn't raelly cause my knee to hurt at all. I have tried to just cut out the stretches on that leg so my knee would not hurt. But than when I think it is o.k. it comes back again. What do I do.

Do you think that I may have a different problem than origanally diagnosed. If so, than I have had this problem for a long time. Thanks (I know the best thing to do is see a doc, although any knowledge or advise right now would be great!) Thank yoy thank you thank you
Teresa

Sorry to hear about your pain.....You should get to a doc. ..Your pain could be sign of many things...should probably have an MRI to check out whats going on in there ....as far as the pain you could try putting ice on it i find that helps a lot with pain and swelling.
Good luck

Sorry to hear about the resurfacing of the pain. I have had OSD since I was about 11 and im now 21 and I still experience pain from it everyday. Some days are better then others but when my knees hurt really bad I rest them and use some stuff called Tiger Balm that helps. It is made by the people that make the Burts Bee's products.
