KNEE ARTHRITIS - Autologous chondrocyte implantation (A.C.I.) :

ACI appears not to be working for me - - Posted by bobrob (bobrob), 23 December 2004

I had ACI  knee May 10, 2003 I am still in pain and my knee still buckles causing me to fall. My Doctor looked inside my knee again to see what the problem could be and he advised me that he could not see what was causing the pain. Any body out there with the same problem. Please advise.

                                            Thankyou

Did you have a MRI to check the underlying bone.  The surface might be fine...so the ACI worked okay, but the bone underneath has some edema.

Did you surgeon say that the actual regrowth of cartilage didn't work?

Janice, thanks for responding.

My surgeon told me that the regrowth of cartilage did work and the MRI shows that everything is ok.

I am frustrated trying to figure what could be causing the pain and buckling.

I have seen three (3) other surgeons for there opinions  and they were not able to tell me the cause. All three doctors recommened that I have a partial knee replacement.

What do you think?                         Thanks

Maybe it is necrosis - where the bone is dead. This can still be treated with a abrasion to make the bone bleed followed by ACI to repair.
