Meniscus :
Medial Meniscectomy Question - - Posted by DannyK (DannyK), 5 January 2005
I'm 49 years old, fairly active. I injured my knee in early November, had an MRI and my OS says that I have a 1.5 inch (almost a complete tear) of my Medial Meniscus and recommends complete removal, since only a small portion is still intact. I'm concerned about arthritis and being able to resume activities such as softball, basketball, etc...
I would like to hear other's recommendations and experiences after having this procedure and if you believe there is an alternative to complete removal (my knee if slightly swollen at all times and is painful with any activity).

Depending on where the tear is in the meniscus, it can be repaired and that is much better then having your meniscus removed. Heving your meniscus removed can lead to early arthritis and so keeping it is much better. Ask if your OS will do a repair, also if it has to be removed you could ask if a meniscus transplant is something that you are eligable for.
