Partial ACL Tear - - Posted by nmcbride (nmcbride), 12 November 2003

Hi,

I had a partial ACL tear a few years ago, as far as I know the OS did nothing to repair this during my TTT (however, I'm not sure so he may have done something, I was never really told), I have pain on and off but nothing too significant, I was just wondering does a partial ACL tear heal itself without any surgery?  Am I more susceptible to further damage to ACL which has already been injured in the past?   Huh

Natalie.

Partial ACL tears will really never heal.  Long term stability depends on the percentage torn and overall muscle strength.  What sometimes will happen is that part of the ACL will fuse to the PCL.  This will return some stability, but the laxity is still there.
