Meniscus :

Worried about surgury - - Posted by rockstar (rockstar), 6 December 2004

First things first. I would like to thank all the people that post on these bulliten boards. I've been surfing them for about a week and they gave me knowledge about my tear and excellent questions to ask my ortho.
As for surgury, I am set for surgury on tuesday (12-7-04)for a right knee meniscus tear that is not repairable  and am really nervous. I have NEVER had anything that required medical attention other that a broken arm. I have never even had an IV before if that gives you any idea of how much I am in the dark about this. Just want to know what to expect and am wondering about recovery time. Thanks!

Hi rockstar  Smiley
I had a torn meniscus in my right knee along with a meniscal cyst. I had surgery on Nov. 4 this year and had about 60 % removed because, it was a large tear completely through my meniscus. I was pretty nervous going into surgery too. I never had any surgery and only had been in the hospital in 95 for the birth of my daughter !! I learned alot on this board prior to surgery but, nothing can help with the nervousness. I will tell you that once I was back in the hospital area before surgery I felt much better due to the nurses making me calm plus they put heated blankets on me that felt oh so good  Roll Eyes Try to focus on how gret it will be when you recover and if you are having pain now how it will feel not to have pain. I only have pain now when I am overdoing it and pushing myself. I do have a torn ACL he found during the scope so, I am not sure how my knee will be feeling as time wears on but, back to surgery .. once they take you back to the operating room it goes so quick especially if you will be put to sleep the nurses and anesthesiologist work really quick and the next thing you know you are in recovery waking up !! You will be fine and all will go well  Cheesy
Remember after surgery rest, ice, and elevate and by next week you will be feeling alot better.
Good Luck .. Michelle  Smiley

Hey Rock Star,
I had some meniscus remove a couple of years ago.  I don't know how much they are removing, but when they did mine there was minimal pain for a few weeks.  I was back at work two days after surgery, and back to activity within a couple of weeks.
If your surgery is anything like mine, it'll be no problem.  Good luck.

Thamks for the replys!! Had the surgury on Tuesday and have had little swelling or briusing.Knee feels 'tight' , but other that that I am feeling good. The doc used a local with sedation. I don't remember ANYTHING after being wheeled into the operating room. Doc removed 30% of medial meniscus. Thanks again

Will be having surgery this month and  expect to have medial miscus repair and also to have mcl repair done.  Things continue to worsen as the time goes on . Please suggestions on how to cope with severe pain at front and side of knee in meantime as well as sugery and the aftermath.
