Collateral Ligaments and other non-cruciate tendons & ligaments around the knee :

medial retropatellar retinaculum - - Posted by waynem (waynem), 8 September 2003

Jargon busters appreciated here...
After injuring myself at Ju-Jitsu class i was diagnosed as having a
1. full thickness cartilage defect on the lateral weight bearing part of the lateral femoral condyle measuring about 0.8cm x 0.8cm in size.
2. Acute on chronic rupture of the medial retropatellar retinaculum.
The recommendation of surgery is as follows.....
1. open repair of the medial retinaculum with augmentation using semi-tendinosus hamstrings tendon (galeazzi repair).
2. Assess cartilage and either a microfracture/abrasion athroplasty or an osteochondral autograft procedure could be performed.

I have a general understanding of this injury, however, my internet research is proving inconclusive on what a (galeazzi repair) consists of..  And how do they augment a hamstrings tendon (what is the procedure).

I am familiar with ACL and MCL but what is the medial retropatellar retinaculum? is there another non technical name for itHuh

Forward thanks

Wayne

Wayne-

What you are referring to is also just simple called the medial retinaculum.  It is the tissue to the medial side of your kneecap that keeps it stable and within the femoral groove.

The main portion of this retinaculum is the medial patellofemoral ligament.

I had this repaired in my knee 14 weeks ago and about 2 weeks after the repair managed to completely rupture it again.  I am scheduled for a complete reconstruction on this soon.

Good luck-

Heather - my medial ligament reconstruction appears to be going well - I think I sent you a note previously - I had it done in conjunction with my TTT as my knees always dislocate laterally (well, now only the left one does).  Do you find your new ligament to be lumpy at all?  I know your surgery wasn't too terribly long ago, but I was just curious.
