Joint hypermobility disorders :

me again :) - - Posted by Stacey (Stacey), 7 April 2003

Hi everyone,  I know this is a knee board but i have a question dealign with my wrist.  As you know i have been haivn g quite a few problems with it lately and it has been bothering me more than my knee (which is actually feeling quite good lately Smiley ).  Yesterday i had a bad day and had to take a few toradol.  Then last night i was going to bed and it felt like my wrist took a kink in it but it was so unbelievably painful.  i tried movig it to get the kink out but it hurt to even move it a little bit.  i finally just played around with it and after 15 minutes it felt like it popped back into place.  Is this a sublaxation/dislocatoin or jsut a normal kink in my wrist??  I was at hte point i was almost debating going to the hospital but we are still in the middle of an ice storm and our ER's have a 10 hour waitign list and supervision because of hte SARS in the area.  What should I do if it happens again?  Today i cant put the plaster splint on because it hurts (but i can wear the wrap type one).  Sorry about hte post just didnt know what to do.

Not Much advice as I'm no great expert. But My joints often feel out of place, I wouldn't go as far as to say dislocated, just not in the right place. I have been to hospital and generally after a doctor has poked and proded, I'm in more pain, and then I'm dismissed with the "its just a sprain rest it" line.
Sorry i can't answer you're question, but I hope this helps a bit any way.

sounds like a subluxation or dislocation Stacey, if the ER's there have such a waiting list due to SARS then do they have and After hours doctors clinic, medical clinic or primary care clinic that you can visit if this happens again. I am guessing that SaRS patients DON"T need X-Ray etc so, maybe if you ring your GP etc next time (after hours if you can) and ask for him/her to fax an x-ray form to the ER for an x-ray for you.
This way you shouldn't be overly exposed to the SARS patients (NOT SOMETHING YOU WANT, as Chronic Pain decreases the Immune System and makes us more pron to get all infections going) if you can wear a MASK if you do go in for X-rays.
If this occurs during buisness hours then ring your docotr (or a Docotr) and Ask for an emergency appointment as you think you have dislocated your wrist. Most docotrs etc should have emergency appointment or slot you in anyway as dislocations can cause nerve and vascular impairement and thus lasting damage.
I know this doesn't help much but that is all I can offer stacey. This happens to me a LOT too and it can be anything from a subluxation and dislocation of the joint to a spasm in a muslce or such in the joint or even a subluxed tendon, where the tendon snaps over the joint and needs to be "snapped" back into the correct position.
Good Luck Stacey and I hope this doesn't happen to you again.

Thanks for your replies.

Shaz, I will take your ideas into consideration adn if it happens again I will definatly make my way to a doctor or emergency room.  I have had difficulties with the plaster brace and didnt wear it last night but now my wrist is tender.  THanks again for hte replies.

Hi all

Just thought i would update everyone.  Accordign to my PT, yes i did dislocate my wrist.  He said that the muscles and things in my forearm were 'revolting' against it.  I am now not able to do my exercises for a week, and am suposed to just rest it (yeah i have 3 exams within a week and have to pack to move back home).  He did show me however (due to poor ER waits, SARS etc) how to get my wrist back into place if it did it again.  Also it was my last pt with him (since i am moving back home shortly) so he gave me his email address and told me to stay in touch to let me know how i was doing Smiley.  This is the first PT who actually seems concerned about me.

Hi Stacey,

I dislocate my wrist joints too, so I know how painful they can be. It makes using the crutches murder too! Tongue

I hope your arm is feeling a bit better now and that you've ben able to rest it in spite of your exams. My only advice is to keep working as hard as you can to try and strengthen the muslces around the joint when it feels okay enough to work it, as this can help stabilise the loose ligamnets and to consider seeing if you can see an appliance specialist about getting a comforatble rigiid splint moulded to your wrist, that you can use during the day when you are working.

Take crae and good luck with your exams if you ahve any remaining. Thinking of you ads ending a big hug.  Kiss

Love......Jo
