KNEE ARTHRITIS - Injections into the joint :

Injections?? - - Posted by icyfx (icyfx), 9 August 2003

I was offered a cortizone injection but I heard too many bad stories. Some say it works, some seem crippled by it. I really hate shots and I go into shock everytime I get one. Amazing I survived 3 surgeries to date. I'm really confused if I should just do it and get over it or what? Which one is better? Can ya help a chicken out??   Undecided

Hey

I can't tell you one way or the other what to do, but I can offer you my story and hope that it serves as some type of advice or guidance.

I have had a cortisone shot in the past when trying to avoid surgery and never could tell a difference so it didn't work, but then on the other hand my grandmother gets them ever so often and they help her tremendously, she says she couldn't live without them, so I guess it just depends on how bad your condition is and how your body reacts to it, you just have to go with what you feel like is right.

Good luck, Jennie

I had a cotisone shot in my left knee - I have severe osteoarthritis.  It helped a lot for about three months.  Now I will have Synvisc injections in September.  I am willing to try to avoid surgery at this time.  Zelda

Embarassed Forgot to say that it did not hurt at all for the cortisone - hope I can say the same about Synvisc.  Zelda

..... maybe I'm a bit of a sook but the cortisone shots I have had have always tended to bring tears to my eyes, and it hasn't been down to an excess of emotion I can tellya!  It always seems to settle after about forty-eight hours but I reckon it would need a lot more local anaesthetic mixed with it to make that any fun at all!

Hiya!

I think I have the record when it comes to injections... I haven't got a clue how many I had so far, A LOT!! Too many! I had cortisone injections, NASAID injections, 3 Synvisc injections and am currently having my 2nd series of Synvisc. I am 26 and all this has been going on since late 2000. I never had much pain relief from the cortisone, Synvisc gave me some pain relief, the NSAID injections are very painfull ones!!!

Still, I rather give injections than receiving them myself...

Can you tell me what "maltracking" is?  Thanks.  If the injections don't help - why do you keep doing them - just curious!  Zelda

My patella is maltracking and that means that when I bend my knee my patella is tracking too much laterally. Mainly because i have no femoral groove and my lateral ligaments are too tight. Hope this helps.

Well, sorry but I don't know those knee terms but I will research it a bit.  I only know I have osteoarthritis in my knees - left one has little cartiledge! I assume you injured yours.  Zelda
