Overuse problems of the knee :

what's wrong with my knees? - - Posted by hallsie (hallsie), 7 December 2004

Hello, I'm 16 years old and I have problems with my knees.  I am a Ballet dancer, I probably dance a good 8 hours a week I also play basketball which I understand most likely sounds like Patellar tendinitis.  I noticed my knees hurting about 2 years ago but didn't really take it into consideration.  This year they got incredibly worse and making grinding noises if I've done too many activities in a day or if I've been walking or sitting for too long.  I went to the doctor about a month ago and he didn't know what was wrong with them so he told me to take a month off of dance and only dance 2 classes a week which I have been doing, but my knees are not getting better.   I was talking to a girl in my dance class about a week ago and telling her what it felt like and she said that I might have Patellar tendinitis.  So I just wanted to know if you guys thought so too.  Thanks for reading this and please let me know!

Hi, the next time you go to your GP why not ask for a referral to an orthopedic knee specialist.  If you are doing alot of activities and you are having pain then you really should get your knees checked out.

You are young and want those knees of yours to last.

Taking a month off of dance won't help much, other than letting any inflammation subside.

You should find out what's causing the problem by seeing an orthodedist as the previous poster suggested or you should at least see a good physical therapist. I saw a PT who specializes in sports injuries and she sized me up pretty fast- she knew just what my problem was and what to do about it. If you could see one who specializes in sports or, if possible, one who specializes in treating dancers, that would be best.

Hello, in case you were wondering, I went to a specialist and she told me right away that I have Patellar Tendonitis then i got some arch supports made and they're getting better and I am continuing to play basketball and dance but taking time off when my knees need it.  Thanks for the advice!
