KNEE ARTHRITIS - Injections into the joint :
More on Synvisk...bump on knee question... - - Posted by bayrab (bayrab), 16 March 2003
I had my first synvisk injection on Friday. It stung a little, but not bad, no worse than cortisone. My knee felt a little odd, but didn't hurt immediately after. I've been walking, driving, riding my horse, and knee is mostly OK... the only problem so far is a goose egg at the injection site. Seems I have a local reaction going on... no pain there. It doesn't hurt to touch it. Doesn't hurt at all, just looks odd, this lump on my knee...
any thoughts? anyone experience this?

If it is not painful, nor hot and red, it is unlikely to be an infection (eg abscess). Maybe some of the Synvisc was injected outside the joint, or maybe there has been some leakage from the joint. I think it might reduce with local massage.

Also, it is possible that the fluid went into a bursa (one of the natural pouches around the joint) - is the 'egg' over the kneecap?

The "egg" is right at the injection site, to the right side of the knee. I wore a neoprene knee brace yesterday and the pressure seemed to reduce the swelling, but overnight, the egg popped up again... still no pain or redness or heat.. just a bump about the size of a quarter..
