Bone breaks around the knee :
need some support :( - - Posted by booms (booms), 27 August 2004
Hello,
I crushed both my knee caps in a car accident last year december. i have been operated and there are wires in both the legs. I can bend my legs pretty good and untill last week could walk normally and also run a few steps.
since 5 days my one knee is acting up. I can bend it perfectly while lying down, no pain at all... but as soon as i stand up, it gets stiff within a minute. I have to walk straight legged. This just happend out of the blue. Please let me know if any one of u experienced the same thing...
while sitting on the bed, both my knees feel very normal, just like before. but as soon as i get up, left knees starts hurting...
Also, after the patella surgery, can people run like before?
low and depressed
Booms.

I don't have a patella break, but I can say that overall, with any injury, it does get better.
My first week after surgery I was in soooo much pain, I couldn't imagine life without painkillers.
Now, I just take some Tylenol at the end of the day to help ease the achiness. And, I'm walking!!!
I know it's hard to believe, but this time will go by somewhat quickly.
Take care,
Sarah

Bhumika,
TWO FRACTURES? OH, no!
I'm not surprised that you have pain standing. You don't have a "good" leg to compensate for the bad one.
My guess is that your healing process will be quite different from the rest of us.
If you still have the hardware in, you should check with your doctor to be sure all of it is still in the proper place. One other thing that I noticed when healing was that my knee didn't always feel better as the swelling got better. Now I know that seems strange, because we all want that swelling to go down. But it seemed that I had a lot more grinding and crunching when the knee was less swollen--kind of like the fluid was keeping things from touching and, thus, limiting the friction.
To answer your running question. I cannot really run. Try as I might, I can't seem to get a rythmic motion going, and I end up with a kind of half limp when I try to run. I do, however, find it reassuring that I can move faster in case of an emergency, even if I do look weird in the process.

wow thanks for the replies
This is the best forum I've ever joined.
There were so many q's in my mind. Whenever I saw someone limping, I'd be inclined to ask them what happend and how good would it get. Always wished I'd find one person who went thru the same kind of surgery and see whether he/she can do everything normally. But now after reading these post's it gives me assurance that life won't be that bad.

hey there
Sounds like your doing well after the kind of accident/surgery you had....
The fact you can bend your knee[s] no problems when lying down is also good thing.
Have you been having physiotherapy since you had the operation? I assume you have and if so your physio would be a great person to ask about the stiffness you have been getting in your knee when standing.....
One thing I have learnt from having a knee injury is that "patience" seeems to be one of the most important factors to have at your disposal during recovery.....as it takes quite a bit of time for some things to repair!!
All the best......
