KNEE ARTHRITIS - Total Knee Replacement :

Help for my 77yr old Mum after TKR - - Posted by Joans_kid (Joans_kid), 2 March 2004

Hi all,
This is my first posting as have just come accross Knee Guru and am hoping to collect some advice for my 77yr old Mum who has just undergone TKR and not having a great time with it.

The main problem is the pain ( as I am sure is the case with everyone else in this situation!) - and it's whether there are any hints and tips that anyone can provide to help with this.

She had the op about 5 weeks ago.  Her knee is still very swollen and she has 2 different types of painkiller ( one is quite strong, but not sure of the name ).  She tries not to take the strong one as does not want to be come addicted to this- but when taken it does do the trick.

She is doing her excercises and has been told by the physio that she is doing quite well with her range of movement.

She's finding it very difficult to get a good night's sleep due the pain - but is not sure whether what she is going through is normal and how long it may last for.

Unfortunately she is not the type of person to be contacting the dr's to ask these questions , so I thought I would see how this forum could help.

Any advice will help so that I can pass it on.  Unfortunately Mum does not have a computer , otherwise she would probably be on here herself!

Looking forward to hearing from anyone who can help.

I haven't yet had a TKR but have spent the last 6 months reading forums and doing research.  This site is excellent for all kinds of knee issues but I've found the On Our Feet site (link below) to be great for TKR specific questions.  There are wonderful folks willing to help on both sites.  Best of luck to you and your mom,

Heron

Thanks Heronak - I'll try that website , had a quick look and it looks like there would be some good information.

I've already been able to pass on some details to Mum and I think it has lifted her spirits to know that there's others out there who can provide some help in languague she can understand.

Wish I could get Mum using the internet , but that may be more painfull than the Knee op for both of us!!!!

This old Forum was so valuable that we have kept it as an archive. It is just for reference. If you want to ask questions or offer advice, there is also a current Bulletin Board which you can access from our home page.
