Meniscus :

Meniscus tear - referred to neurologist not ortho? - - Posted by bwalling (bwalling), 5 December 2004

I have a tear in my medial meniscus.  I also have a Baker's cyst.  Both were found by my GP on MRI after I complained of pain following an injury playing soccer.  I was told that I needed to have surgery and would be referred out for that.  I was given a referral to a Neurologist (I was expecting an Orthopedic Surgeon) who is an osteopath.

Is there something my doctor knows that I don't know?  Can this neurologist help me as well or better than an orthopedist?  For all I know, the office staff made a mistake and gave me the wrong name and number.

I would check with your GPs office as soon as possible and find out what is going on.  Hopefully it's just an office error, but you should be seen by an orthopedic surgeon.  I don't think a neurosurgeon would have anything to do with a torn meniscus anyway, so it would just be a waste of time and money for you.
