Joint hypermobility disorders :

Reading materials - - Posted by Liz (Liz), 14 March 2003

Does anyone have suggestions for books with information on hypermobility, such as causes. symptoms, related issues, etc?  I did see the post below about the book "Hypermobility of Joints", but at $180.00 on Amazon, that one is a little steep for me right now.  Any other books that you guys have found helpful?

Thanks!
Liz

Have you thought of asking your local library to obtain a copy, most libraries will do there best to get hold of books you request.
It's worth a try.

Our local hospital has 2 large medical libraries where anyone with a regular library card can check out anything they want. Maybe your hospital does too. Theresa

My local library managed to get a copy if "Hyoermobility of the Joints" for me within about a week, so it might be worth checking your own library. I think it vosts about 30-40p to place an out of area order for a book, so it's a much better option than the Amazon asking price!  Wink

Beyond that the various connective tissue/ hypermobility sites have some very reasonably priced books and leaflets about conditions and HMS. I've just bought a brilliant book on EDS from the Ehlers Danlos Support Group which is extremely informative and helpful. It misgh be worth checking some of the sites you regularly visit  (and maybe some you don't through a search engine) to see if they have any that will be useful for your specific problem.

Hope you find what you are looking for and that your library manage to locate the other book for you. Take care.

Love........Jo

Thanks - I am going to head to the local libraries and see if I can get them to order in a copy of "Hypermobility of Joints", but I was hoping there might be other books that are cheaper that I could buy for home.  Plus, my family is really interested in this, as my mother has had the same problems for years and years, and is now also putting together the pieces and realizing she may have a hypermobility disorder.  It'd be nice to order her a book so she learn a little more about it (her internet skills are lacking, heh).

I did notice on Amazon, there is a book coming out in May called "Hypermobility Syndrome: Recognition and Management for Therapists".  This looks promising.  Smiley

Thanks for the info,
Liz

Thanks Sharon... I really appreciate all that info!  I think I am going to order the Parker/Parker EDS book, especially after today.  I've known that I am hypermobile, but after reading all of Sharon's posts about EDS and what it's about, I decided to scour some web sites and learn more.  I'm thinking I have EDS.  I have SO many of the symptoms of classical EDS.. tissue fragility, translucent skin, scarring, gum disease, joint pain, severe bruising when I barely bump into something, 8 out of 9 on the Breighton scale (9 out of 9 on a good day and I can get my hands to the ground).  I've only had a dislocated finger, but all of my joints pop around and are very loose which causes me a lot of pain on occasion, and I'm currently being "treated" (meaning, my doc sent me to therapy and that's it) for Chondromalacia in my left knee.  I have also had horrible problems with what I always thought were "pimples" on my forearms and shins.. not exactly pimples but I don't really have a better word to explain it  My childhood doctor was never able to explain it and I've had it for probably 18 years now.  I assume these are the "spheroids" that are referred to in many of my readings?

Another interesting thing... my mother is nearly identical to me as far as symptoms go, and she's currently being treated for Degenerative Joint Disease (she's had both her main thumb joint cartilages replaced in the past year due to excessive weardown).

I know I have rambled like this in previous posts also, heh... but it's just so satisfying to have possibly found a reason for problems that have been lingering for years and years.  I just hope I can find a doctor that will analyze all this and come to the same conclusion.

Thanks, Liz
