Bone breaks around the knee :

Bad fall- not again! - - Posted by chris941 (chris941), 20 December 2004

i went to the doctor today and got the cast off. I had the cast on for 6 weeks after I dislocated broke my patella (it was a chip and don't need surgery at the moment) while wrestling and my knee was atrophied. The doctor said i could put a little weight on it and even bend it slightly. As i got off the table, i stood there, then lightly touched my toes to the ground, the knee snapped, and all the muscles tightened, and it was completely bent until we pulled it back. it was EXTREMELY PAINFUL. My face went white and i nearly passed out. I cannot put weight on it, and i am in a knee immobilizer and feel like if i try to bend it again, i will go through that pain again. Will it happen again? has this happened to other people? the doctors told me it's not exactly unusual but it will be a very long long process of physical therapy and it will be very painful so they gave me vicodin. I just got home and my knee is elevated in the knee immobilizer. has anyone else gone through this? what should i expect in the future?

Hi, Chris - I just wanted to welcome you to KneeGeeks and let you know that I hope you get the answers you need. Generally speaking, it takes awhile to regain range of motion after being unable to move the joint for so long, so what you describe sounds normal. At any rate, I am sure others will provide you with helpful info. You may also want to read posts from others with similar injuries.

Again, I wish you all the best in your recovery!  Grin

Chris,

That sounds so painful, and I certainly don't blame you for having questions! When I first came out of the immobilizer, my leg was very weak and straight. It's normal to be able to weight-bear, even right after surgery.

What did the OS say caused your reaction? How much longer does he/she expect you to be immobilized?

Welcome to the board.

LizL
