NOTES - Surgical Procedures :

meniscal transplant without ligament detachment? - - Posted by niamh (niamh), 17 November 2004

Hi there

i would like to know if it is possible to do a meniscal transplant on the inside of a knee without having to detach and re-attach the inside ligament from the thigh bone.
i have been told by my surgeon that this is part of the surgical procedure. i am considering haveing a  meniscal transplant in belgium, but don't like the idea of haveing to "mess around" with the perfectly good ligament too, particularly as i have had a cruicial ligament replacement 10 years ago .  i have read anything that i could find on the web about this topic and got the impression that some surgeons in the states do it without touching the ligament.  IS THIS CORRECT??

any answer greatly appreciated!!

Niamh,

I have had 2 meniscus transplants on my right knee, a medial meniscus transplant in 3/01 and the lateral one in 6/01. I did not have to have any ligaments "detached" to have it done. I have a 3 inch incision on the side of my knee and the same size incision on the front of my knee, it takes boths incisions to do the transplant, so now I have 4 large incisions on my knee. I live in the U.S so that might be the difference in techniques used here and in Belgium.
