Bone breaks around the knee :

avulsion fracture right tibial plateau? - - Posted by Samboy (Samboy), 17 November 2004

Hi There,
three weeks ago a fracture my right knee playing sports. They did a Xray and found an avulsion in the right tibial plateau. Been keeping it in a removable brace. went to the Dr on monday and he ordered a two phase bone scan which I did yesterday. The report says as follow "Fractures involving the right medial tibial condyle and at the superior aspect of the proximal tibiofibular joint. Reactive synovitis and evidence of joint effusion".
I have to see the dr next monday, but I would like to know a bit more about this type of injury. I understand that this type of injury may also be related to ligaments damage.
I can put some weight on it and if I keep my leg straight no pain is involve. If I try to bend it then it hurts.
Any advise will be appreciated
Regards
Sam

Hi, Samboy. Welcome to the club noone wanted to join!  Shocked

I broke my rt. tibia plateau (medial or inside) over 2 years ago which required surgery and extensive therapy to get back to near normal walking. I am at about 95% recovered. I will probably never run again (I can lightly jog) but I can do most things I was able to do before the accident.

I am not sure about your situation, but recovery will vary depending on several factors including the severity of the injury, whether you need surgery to repair any broken bones or torn ligaments or cartiliage, and how dedicated you are to doing the work (PT) to get better.

Hope that helps somewhat. I would suggest reading the diaries on http://www.mybrokenleg.com under the WHO section relating to tibia plateau injuries to see if there are any out there with which you can relate. And if you get bored, my diary is located in my signature block below!  Wink

I wish you all the best in your recovery, and please keep us posted on your progress! Grin

Kathy,

thanks for replying.

Just been to the Dr and he advised that the fracture is healing ok. I will now go to PT for the next four weeks. He told me that I have a torn ACL and he will have to operate. but before that I have to get the muscles and ligaments going. So i guess there is a light at the end of the tunel.

Once againg thanks for replying and Bless you

Sam
