Meniscus :

Ideas for Recovery Plans??? - - Posted by haroldb (haroldb), 31 December 2004

Hi All
I posted the following on another boarad and got no response.
Hopefully someone with experience can give me some expecattion as to when I can get back to running.
Before knee problems I was running 50+ miles per week.
I don't want to rush things, but I don't want to waste any time either.
My OS simply says "do what you can tolerate".

Any suggestions on other peoples experiences would be greatly appreciated.
BTW - I had Medial Meniscus repair on Dec 21. and am able to bear full weight on my leg at most times with the occasional pains after I keep leg  in one postion too long ( more than a few minutes) and then move it.

I have spent time looking around this forum and picking up useful bits of information. I have noticed or so it seems that when most other people have this meniscus surgery that they are in a Hospital environment and then are in either wheelchair or crutches and a brace and PT.

When I had my surgery last week it was in a Sports Clinic. I had General Anestetic ( i dont wnat anyone sticking things in my back) and when I woke they monitored me for and hour, took me to the parking lot and presented me to my wife to drive me home. Oh yeah, and a prescription for Tylenol #3.

I was walking from then on, albeit very ginerly for the first few days.
Can any one offer opinion(s) on whether I should get a leg brace to aid in recovery.
Nothing was mentioned to me about PT either but I will be seeing the surgeon next Tuesday to remove the stitches and will discuss it with him.

Did I correctly read that you had a repair?
If this is the case, then you need to be VERY careful.  The repair takes 3 mths to actually heal itself.  In that time you need to be extremely careful.  Generally speaking, the consensus on rehab is immobilisation and non to light weight bearing for 6 wks followed by pt.  You would be looking at approx 6mths before returning to full sports.

However if you had a shaving or removal, then the rehab is different.  Most people walk out of hospital, sometimes on crutches and then can get back to full activities in a couple of months.

Please check with your os on what he actually did.
Ring his office and find out.

In the meantime, rest, ice, and elevate.  And take it very carefully.

Take care.

My advice mate - don't run on it for a while - there's no point risking exacerbating your injury while its healing - you could end up turning a "temporary" injury into a long-term chronic knee issue if you push it too hard early on, and it's not worth it - so - take it gently in the first 3-4 months and concentrate on careful physio excercises.

Good luck.
