NOTES - Surgical Procedures :
Arthroscopy... - - Posted by nick1579 (nick1579), 6 September 2004
Hi,
I'm mostly likely having an ACL reconstruction later in the year. I also have a grade 3 MCL tear. My Doc wants to do an Arthroscopy next month, which I've agreed to, but was just wondering what it's all about? In particular...
(a) will he actually do anything to the knee (i.e. remove any unwanted fragments), or merely have a look at what's going on?
(b) How long will the treatment last? Will I be needing to stay overnight?
(c) Is it painful afterwards? Will I be able to walk okay?
Any comments/thoughts appreciated
Nick

Never had an ACL injury but have had 7 arthroscopic procedures. They are for a lack of better words a piece of cake. Usually just two little pin holes and a swollen knee for a bit. I was putting weight on the leg and walking on crutches out of the hospital. In your case it sounds like the best and quickest way for the surgeon to look inside the knee to see whats going on with your ACL.
Now he should tell you before the surgery whether or not he will repair anything major or not like your ACL so you can better prepare yourself for when you go home.
Take care
