Meniscus :

both medial&lateral tears - - Posted by cynnm (cynnm), 8 December 2004

Hi.  I hope someone has a similar history.  I had an ACL reconstruction 8 years ago and returned to pretty much all levels of activities.  7 months ago I started having ++ pain when playing sports - got worse to the point where I stopped all activities and have been rehabing it for the past 3 months.  MRI showed two tears - medial and lateral posterior horns.  Symptoms - knee unstable, clicking, pain & swelling 1-4 days following activity.  I've started to increase my rehab activity VERY SLOWLY and the knee's been quite reactive - swollen, sore, decreased ROM...Q-Has anyone had this type of injury; and if so, what has been your management (i.e. surgery, conservative...).  I'm under 30 and don't want to speed up the process of OA, but I also want to be able to jog and play sports.  Help  Undecided

meniscus tears usually cannot heal on there own so considering you have an active lifestyle you will probably need surgery.  I just had a meniscus repaired and I am rehabing it now.

Do you know if the tears are large?  The way you make it sound they are serious tears and or you have also damaged ligaments.  The instability is a major problem and that is why surgery is probably necessary.

Talk to your OS about your options.  Good luck and let us know what happens
