Bone breaks around the knee :

questions about strange click beside the knee - - Posted by Ron11 (Ron11), 17 December 2004

I have this strange click feel(can't really hear it) when i extend and flex my knee around at 175 degress on the inner side of my knee just below that bump bit(joint bit) anyone had a similar click in their knees or know what is actually wrong ? i had this problem when i damaged my knee(ligaments)

Ron,

I also have a similar click at the same point in the knee as you have on flexing.  I have a partial ACL tear which is old (9 years) which may or may not have healed, so not sure if its involved at all I also have just had a meniscectomy, this clicking wasnt there before my arthroscopic meniscectomy, my pt seems to think that it is bone and not ligament that is making the clicking, you can clearly feel it click on flexing, although it doesn't really cause any pain, just a tightening feeling, I'm still at a loss as to what this is, we have so far ruled out ligament or tendon complications, plica or scar tissue, so not quite sure where to look from here, if you get any info please let me know.

I think i found out what the problem is.(took me months)
its menisicus tear:

In the McMurray's test, the health care practitioner will have you lie on your back while holding the heel of your injured leg with your leg bent. Pressure is placed on the outside of the knee with the practitioner's other hand, and the leg is straightened with the foot turned in (internally rotated). Pain and/or a click over the inner part the joint indicate an inner (medial) meniscal tear

i have a partial ACL tear(i think) also how does your partial ACL tear feel like ? any certain things you can't do ? since i don't feel any of the ACL tear symptoms but my doctor said it was the ACL thats damaged.

i also got told the clicking noise could also be from arthritise Huh

Clicks and pops are normal after such an injury. It may be a good idea that if it is not bothersome enough, to just ignore it and ride it out. However, if it is becoming unbearable, schedule a MRI or exploratory surgery (the MRI may not show anything if you have hardware - the surgery would be inserting a scope to search out the knee's mechanics and such with a camera).  All the best to you in your pursuit of recovery!!  Grin

thanks, my doctor told me the click is a sign of arthritis. What do you think? i thought it was something like a mensicus tear or something but he asked me if i had any looseness or pain and i said no.

It could be arthritis, it could be latent scar tissue, it could be a number of things. Again, if you feel it is bothersome enough to get it checked out (i.e., major PAIN and inability to get around and bend it, etc.), a MRI or an exploration with a small camera may be needed so you will know what is going on inside there. If it is just a minor inconvenience at this point, I wouldn't worry too much about it. I can tell you that over time, my clicking and popping has lessened as I have worked on regaining my mobility.

Since I am a Tib Plat baby, my situation may not be the same, so hopefully some others will know what to tell you. Again, All the best to you in your recovery! Grin

Hi, I am still recovering from my fractured patellar. Happened on 6th Sept, 04. I have quite a lot of painful cracking behind the kneecap. Its not there all the time. Now and again it is so painful it nearly drops me. What could be causing this.? I did have a fall on crutches one week out of plaster. That was very painful for the next two weeks. Seeing PT today, so will ask if he thinks it needs a bit of exploration. Cheers Cheryl

Ron,

I recently saw my surgeon and asked what my clicking was due to:  he told me that it was my tibial tubercle tendon (which was moved during my TTT) clicking back and forth over the bone and that this should settle down once I regain some muscle strength.  This explains mine but obviously not yours!  As far as the partial ACL tear goes, I don't really have any symptoms, apart from instability but because I have so much wrong with my knees, its hard to distinguish what problem is giving me what pain!!  Am glad that my clicking is nothing major though.  Just thought I'd give you an update.

yes i think that sounds like my problem. Because i have lost alot of muscle in my left leg after i injured it. again iam not too sure if that is the excatly problem because i went to see a doctor he said its nothing bad unless it hurt + clicks. Also iam getting a bit suspicious because i have a feeling i don' have a partial tear that the doctors said i have. Mostly because that i don't get any wobbly knee, instability etc and  think what i injured was my patela tendon because after doing some research i found that that after the patela tendon is damaged its hard to left leg against gravity and thats excatly what i had but i had alot of swelling and the fluid lasted about 3 months. If i have torn/pulled a patela tedon any chance of swelling and fluid for soo long ?

for a while i thought it was mensicus tear but the doctor said if it did hurt while doing exercises then it shouldn't be that. soo iam not too sure whats wrong Huh

also can you please tell me some leg muscle exercises(intense ones) that i can do at home ?

and thanks so much everyone !
