Bone breaks around the knee :
Straight Leg Raise - - Posted by Timo (Timo), 1 October 2004
For those of you that are having trouble doing a straight leg raise (SLR) after fractured patella surgery I thought I would share my way of getting it to happen...
7 weeks post op I had my first physio appointment and was asked to do an SLR...I couldn't do it and the physio told me concentrate on doing this all week until my next appointment. I really tried but it just didn't happen until I tried doing it underwater in a bath..first of all just filling the bath really high so I could practise getting my leg in the right position and letting it float to the top...I did this a few times and then tried to lift it out of the water and it just worked...
If your having trouble try this and let me know if it worked

Interesting.
I tried for ages doing a SLR and only in the last month, after almost a year out from surgery, was able to do it.
I was so proud of that as it took aaaaaaages. I just had surgery again two weeks ago to remove my hardware and I'm able to do those SLR's already!!
Small miracles hey, only those in the "know" can relate to.
Congrats on getting the SLR yourself as well!

The trick to doing SLR's are in the quad muscles. If you have weak or nonexistent quads, you will not be as successful and/or you will do them incorrectly. The water is a GREAT cushion as it allows you to work on those areas with less stress. As for myself, I ended up having to have electrostimulation to regain my quads, but once my quads started coming back, doing the exercises in the water was a major breakthrough for me.
Thanks Timo for the tip, and I am living proof that this does work!!
