Cruciate ligaments :
ACL / UK surgen question - - Posted by JAWS (JAWS), 20 January 2005
Hi,
I found out last night that I have torn my ACL and have to have reconstructive surgery. My O S told me and I guess I was in a bit of shock and didn't think to ask a couple of other questions.
I have numbness in my thigh which is constantly there, I also get a bit of twitching around my knee when in certain positions, are these normal side affects to tearing the ACL?
Also I wondered if anyone’s OS for the recon was
Panos Thomas?
Or if anyone knows of him, if he is any good?
Thanks in advance.

I tore my acl 2 wks ago, and I don't have those same symptoms you mention. With me it was excruciating pain when it happenend, then it calmed down with RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation). Within days I was walking on it, and now its feeling back to normal. However, I don't dare do any twisiting activities per my physical therapists instructions.
I would suspect that everyone reacts a bit different to a tear, and its possible that you have more damage then just the acl. With me I also had a meniscus tear and a PCL sprain. You might also have some additional nerve damage thats causing the numbness, etc.
If you have doubts, get an MRI as that will typically show all the damage including the meniscus, etc. As for your surgeon, feel free to talk to other people in your area for referrals.
Best of luck...
