Meniscus :

partial meniscectomy recovery time? - - Posted by OF7 (OF7), 26 April 2003

Hi everyone,

About to go through my second partial meniscectomy (although it's the first one on this knee) next week.  It's a fairly small tear and I've had normal range of motion and good strength up to this point.  I'm having the surgery because I can't perform at my sport - I've been aggressively rehabbing the physio method for two months and it hasn't worked.  Therefore, snip snip. My question is how long should I expect to be off the field? (I'm a healthy 26 year old athlete, competing at the international level) ALso, how long until I'm back at 100% speed?  Anybody have any experience with this?
Thanks a bunch.

oopss... forgot to mention -- posterior horn, medial meniscus.  I've already elected for NO REPAIR and yes, I know the potential consequences...
Cheers.

I just had a partial menisectomy (medial bucket handle tear) two and a half weeks ago.   I was up walking on it gently within 1/2 hour of the surgery and was walking normally the next day.   I'm 2 degrees away from full range of motion as of yesterday (148 degrees on the surgical leg vs. 150 on the good one) and the muscle size/strength is coming back.    I've been riding a stationary bike for short periods and am able to walk fairly long stretches.   My doctor said at 5 weeks post-op, if everything looks to be in good condition, he'll release me to do whatever sport I want.

I ski and mountain bike but not at the competitive level that you are at.   So my doctor had me wait for a week before starting PT (other than straight leg raises and gentle stretching).    Your doctor may have you start earlier and that could speed things along even more.

What was your doctor's estimate of when you'd be back to 100%?
