MRI shows torn meniscus + ACL
« on: May 09, 2018, 08:46:12 AM »
Hi

I had injury and tear my ACL again.
Went through the MRI scan which confirms that but also shows tear in the Meniscus.
Doctor wants to do knee arthroscopy to clean knee and he doesn't recommend another ACL revision as it would be second.
The thing is I have no pain or locking, clicking after couple of months of rehab, there is little instability.

I am now confused if I need the surgery to clean the knee?

If your knee is fully functional (no locking, buckling, pain), Id avoid any sort of menisectomy especially if youve had meniscus surgery before. Carry on with Physio, non impact activity

Cleaning up arthritis or a degenerate meniscus rarely yields long term results and can have complications. Leave it for 6-12 months and see how it is
Came off bike onto concrete 9/9/09
LK arthroscopy 8/2/10
2nd scope on 16/12/10
LK New MRI shows lat & medial meniscus tear & other stuff
RK MRI lat meniscus tear
8/1/15 RK Steroid jab,
RK arthroscopy on 5/2/15
Lateral meniscus trim, excision of hoffa's fat pad, chondral stabilisation

Thanks Vickster.

I just had an appointment with the NHS consultant and he reremmends to do the 3rd ACL reconstruction without even looking at my knee properly or MRI.

The private surgeon who doesn't recommend the 3rd ACL reconstruction nicely discuses with me my MRI and just recommends knee arthroscopy to clean out torn parts.

Hmm not much time for me to think about as the arthroscopy surgery is planned for 23rd.

Good luck for your surgery. Make sure you have a full discussion before the 23rd anbout what you want done if any other damage is found such an ACL tear! MRIs often miss things found when the knee is scoped

Thanks

Yes will do as he might find out more damage or no once he scope the knee.
Maybe if he see the knee from inside then he will have better idea if the 3rd ACL will be worth next time after the scope.

I am going to skip the NHS for now as was there twice and no luck with the ACL
