knee locked even more?
« on: October 05, 2017, 04:33:44 PM »
My knee has been locked from August and I have been on two crutches and gradually got myself on one crutch at the end of September. I am 16 years old and I am having a mri scan on the 23rd October to why I am having the locking. I have also being digionsed with chondromalicia patella in both of my knees. I was doing pretty good the day before when my knee froze and I could not move it. It won't bend or straighten and is locked at 90 degress. I have put the rice method on it and everything and have now gone back on two crutches because I can't even put weight on it.

I am at a loss. I didn't do anything to make it this  :( :( Is there anything that people could reccomeed I do until I see someone?????

I have had knee pain for 4 years now along with the locking. It has never been as bad as this before.

Sorry to hear about your knee problems. With that kind of locking, it sounds like something is wrong and needs to be fixed. If your knee continues to be constantly locked I think you should contact your doctor as see if they can speed up your appointment for the MRI.

I live in the uk, but I am not impressed with the care I am receiving at the moment with the NHS. I was meant to have a Mri Scan in September, but they cancelled it. They say that my alignment is out of place and that I may have a tear in my mensuuis or something else. I have read other posts saying that if a knee is locked, it is considered to be serious as it can do more damage than good. Is that true? I am scared tho, because my knee has been off and on locking for 4 years, but not as bad as this!  :( :( :(

Could you go private once the scan is done? Unfortunately, cancellations of non urgent/elective treatment do happen in the NHS to accommodate emergencies.
You should find a specialist in patella malalignment ideally. Someone like Jonathan Eldridge in Bristol. He does NHS cases so you could potentially transfer across if needing surgery in the future.

Did your mum post on here before?

yeah, it was me! Sorry, but I thought I could not post on here. I saw someone who was my age and decided that I would use it. My appointment was cancelled because it was cancelled by THEM! There were no emergencies we have check. I just need something to keep me going until then

Yes, they likely cancelled it due to needing the scanner for another patient due to an emergency or a backlog caused by a prior emergency (unless there was a technical fault which happens too). Nothing personal, it happens, there isn't finite scanner resource in the NHS. The machines are extremely expensive to buy and run/staff (millions of pounds for the equipment alone), a reason why private scans are costly too.

Do start researching knee specialist options if you can. Have you seen a surgeon yet?

Good luck

  • Never put 100% trust into a negative MRI scan!

Paying privately for an MRI scan varies in price, look around your local region for the best deal around, MRI scan prices have gone down over the last decade paying around 250 to 350 on average in today's prices. Here is a good link to find the cheapest MRI scanning centre in your region. 200 was the cheapest price and 347 was the highest price in my region. I have seen prices as low as 180 if your mum finds a centre that is doing special deals. This happened at a centre up the road where I live that had just opened with promotional MRI discount scanner prices.

Good luck cant be easy to adjust to when you are young, missing out doing sporting activities becomes a psychological hurdle to deal on top of the physical obstacle that will improve over time, once you have found the right OS for your specific knee problem that deals in paediatrics orthopaedic surgery.
