How long was it before you started driving again after your TKR?

Hi Maggs

4 weeks - but I reckon you could be having to wait a bit longer - depending on your car - dunno what setup you have. - How is it all going?

Hi anja.......6 weeks for me now and i'm doing fine. The physio came to visit me a week after I came home from hospital and was amazed at how strong my leg muscles were.......so I don't have to go for any physio or hydro anymore. I'm amazed myself actually considering I couldn't lift my leg off the bed for well over a week while in hospital.

Getting up and down off a chair is now easy and I am back to being able to just sit straight on the ground if needed. I can only bend to 100.......but I can get my knee perfectly straight which was what I wanted.

I want to drive though! I use an ordinary automatic. Don't go to see my surgeon till the 4th April........don't want to wait that long!

Hi Maggs

Hey really well done you! - I believe the criteria is that if you can do a safe emergency stop then you can drive! - and of course if it doesn't hurt to do so!

Some insurance companies are funny and might want you to have the say so of your OS.

Why not send him an email if you are ready to drive just to ask if it is okay with him to do it when you want!

well done again!

Mags, the biggest thing is if you had Left tkr or Right tkr. With automatic, and left tkr there is no real reason not to be able to drive. The instructions  I received said may drive when feel ready, and meds don't interfere. I had left tkr and was driving by one week.Did not have a real choice, as I am the mother of 5 and take care of everybody else. There was nobody to drive me around, I went to the store on day 6 and drove myself. Won't say it didn't knock me for aloop, and cause alot of pain, but it had to be done, and nobody else volunteered.SO off to the store. Thank goodness I had LEfT side tkr. NEXT is the right, so it might not work as well. I don't have good flexion and that was my dream with this tkr. THAT And being rid of all the swelling.Neither has happened. At 6 weeks, you should be able to drive depending on the amount of meds and leg and if it is the right leg, you can extend and flex it. Good luck, CALL AND ASK> TEresa
On going instrumentation failure, chronic infection,
Arthroscopes Left 11 Right 2, MRSA, L TKR  ,  Revision, LR x5, Medial and lateral meniscus repair, Broken prosthesis
Osteochondral Fracture, untreated 6 mths. Revision new tkr 01-07 awaiting new hip and right knee
R TKR pending

Hi Teresa.........as anja knows my case is a bit different.........I only have one leg.....my left.......and of course that was the one with the replacement.  I feel as though I could drive......guess i'll just wait and ask though.
