Can't bend knee 8 weeks post microfracture
« on: March 12, 2016, 03:40:45 PM »
Hi all, I had microfracture 8 weeks ago and have been nwb for 71/2 weeks. Went to os on Thursday for post op check and go ahead to weight bear. I cannot bend my knee and it keeps going purple and blotchy. I have been icing and heating it to try to make a difference but no luck yet. Os stood there saying this is not good at all??? He then tried to force my leg to bend.....I nearly thumped him! 😩
He then said I may have had a bad reaction to the operation and my nerves have reacted badly to it!?? What on earth does that mean? He looked like he didn't know what to do....he has said I have to have urgent physio and hydro. I can say I am very worried...there feels like there is something jamming my knee....HELP!
I have now been weight bearing since then and am in so much pain and swollen.
Please.... Can anyone just give me any advice....
Thanks

It sounds like he is saying you could have developed something called CRPS, also known as RSD. There should be some info on this site if you use search or via Google. I believe ice makes it worse, so best stop until you've seen the specialist. Good luck

I am so very sorry - I have no advice to offer, but I wanted to write to let you know that I hear you.  You are not alone.  I am struggling in a seemingly non-pt phase of my lateral tibial plateau fracture at week 4, but your situation seems much more urgent! If you need to vent, feel free to call on me.  I am a frustrated triathlete who is now watching all of my teammates and multi-sport friends begin their active race schedule without me.  It's just so sad for me. I wish you well and healthy healing quickly!

HI VICKSTER KNOWS HIS STUFF
I HAD MICROFRACTURE ON MEDIAL CRONDIAL 7 weeks ago my knee is bending to 150 deg full bend
to obtain this i used exersise bike not long cycling 5 mins a day 6 times a day. leg slides vmo and quad exersises.
I know i might sound hard here but you have to push that pain barrier to see what you get and its xXX HARD.
mICROFRACTURE WORKS OR IT DOSNT WORK But im afraid it dosnt come without its problems.
QUESTIONS
where was your microfracture done on what part.
any feet problems ankle problems
mal tracking under knee cap.
let me know how big was it mine was massive 2cm 7.8 inch in size.
when you say jamming where is it jamming under knee cap inside joint.
try this sit with bad leg dangling freely swing the leg up and down as far as possible will allow and do for as long as posible just let the leg swing no load on it see if it starts to free up at all.

For what it's worth, when i had my accident (had never had surgery), my knee was purple and blotchy for about over 8 months.  It wasn't a bruise, it was just "sick".  Don't think mine was any form of RSD, because it wasn't painful to the touch.  Anyway, just wanted to say thay it did go away on it's own.

As far as not being able to bend, seems par for the course after being immobile for so long.  Dont know why the doc was so concerned, considering you still have time to get that ROM going.

When you do get to that stage, walking farther than necessary than to do minimal daily tasks is probably a bad idea.  ROM comes first, later comes very light strength training...and walking/gait comes way later.  Even 3 months after a simple chondroplasty, i tried walking around the block and my knee blew up.

Dec 2015: slow speed bicycle crash (wet leaves)
Jan 2016: a zillion x-rays & 2 MRIs only showed tendinosis
Mar 2016: bone scan showed "uptake" in all compartments
Aug 2016: cortisone shot (did nothing)
Mar 2017: diag scope (partial med meniscus resection, med fem chondroplasty, synovectomy)

Can I have a MUA with the wire still in my knee? My leg was on cast for about 3months, now I can't even bend it up to 5 degrees....

Ask your surgeon, only s/he can advise on such things for you :)

i'd guess you should be in physical therapy working on range of motion.  Don't expect ROM to come  back quickly, but PT should hasten that process.

Knees may be different, but, judging by my own wrist and ankle breaks, where i wore a cast for months, it can take several months to regain ROM (i didn't even go to PT)...but it did come back to an acceptable range, eventually.

Maybe give PT a couple months before getting a MUA...but, yeah, your doctor probably knows best.
