Rebuilding quad muscles - very slow walking!
« on: June 17, 2013, 09:17:32 PM »
I had TTT plus MPFL revision reconstruction 8 weeks ago.

Doing well but I am so slow at walking!

Before the operation I had always (since I learnt to walk) walked with my left foot (bad knee) out to the side.  So I never really had much inner quad muscles to begin with because the way I walked meant they were not used.

Since the operation and coming off crutches I have started to walk correctly with both feet straight for the first time in my life....this is great and I am so happy, but the pain!! My thigh and calf is now getting a workout that it never had before so the pain (I think) is making me very slow to walk.

Any tips how to speed it up or do I just take it slow for now - don't want to go too fast for fear of damaging knee again but I know that I need to get over that fear!  The knee feels tight so it's not a natural feeling when walking/.

You are doing really well.  I found that walking correctly rather than fast is better in the long run.  Have patience.  I just came back from PT and they had me walk backwards and viola the walking forward was smooth.

Hang in there quads take a bit to build up but you can do it!

Thanks Hiker gir!

That sounds so interesting about walking backwards! Glad that that worked for you. Thanks for your help.

Yeah I do just have to have patience.  I'm just anxious about getting back to my job on Monday *I am a Montessori teacher which requires a LOT of bending!* and kind of angry with myself that I am not walking faster but like you said walking correctly rather than fast is better!

Thanks :-)

Still walking kind of slow and stiff here too. 11.5 weeks post op. I think we just need more time and strength before we can get faster. Hang in there!

Hi There,

Quad wastage and shrinkage is a common problem after any type of knee surgery and takes a lot of effort and PT to get the quads large again that's automatically going to shrink in size. I am nearly 3.5yrs post op since my last knee surgery and my right quads are still smaller than my left.

Itís easier to get the quads strong again with PT and found it harder to get the quads to become larger again as they were pre op.

Good luck with your recovery.
