Exercise on non-therapy days?
« on: October 11, 2012, 10:48:20 PM »
Hi, I have very intense therapy 3 times a week, sometimes lasting about 3 hours. My therapist told me I should be doing exercises on my off days too but sometimes I feel so spent from my regular PT sessions that I just want to rest or at the most do some stretching. Any opinions on this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

5/14/12 Surgery done to replace ACL, PCL and MCL with cadaver tendons
4/18/13 Recieved news from Doctor that the ACL and PCL healed well but the MCL did not take. More surgery.

hey john,

i dont think that would be a good idea. you'd want to keep a momentum on keeping those muscles activated and getting them used to the weight. if you feel burnt out, you could probably do lower sets. but never stop.

cheers.

I'd probably disagree with never stopping - muscles only get stronger by working them and then resting them.....constant stress on a muscle never lets it recover and grow. I think stretching is a good idea, but perhaps on your days when you feel really spent you could ramp down the intensity and just focus on range of motion work, or balance or something that isn't as demanding? I am not sure what they are suggesting you do so its hard to comment! But there is a need to listen to your body too and if you feel totally spent then it might be a sign to reduce your intensity on a couple of days. Are you able to access a pool for exercises - that can be less stressful on the joint but allow you to still do a decent session?

Thanks guys,
Yeah, I totally agree with both of you. I rested as much as I could yesterday and did a bunch of stretching and felt great at my therapy session this morning.  I think I also had a bit of a flu bug earlier in the week too. Thanks again
