Happy 5th Birthday to my knees
« on: October 04, 2012, 08:23:36 PM »
Hi all, just popped in on my left knee's fifth birthday (right knee had hers in July) to reassure you all that despite the fight to get on the waiting list, the pain, the struggle to get flexion, and the seemingly slow progress you may think you are making ... IT'S WORTH IT!

I have gone from having to drive to the corner shop pre-op to now being able to walk a couple of miles with no problems, I can also walk up and down slopes, walk on uneven surfaces and manage stairs easier. (Although going down a lot of stairs is still a bother.) I still haven't got over the novelty of being able to stand in a queue!

I am determined always to appreciate this and not take it for granted.

So if you ever get despondent about your progress, just keep on keeping on, things will get better, and you will start to regain your old life.

Best wishes to all of you.
Chris

Congratulations on being a success story!  My PKRs are only 2 years and 6 months old, but I treasure them each day just as you do.  My sister's TKRs are over 17 years and going strong, despite her being over 300 lbs.

Lets make your celebration post a series of success stories that encourage others who are in pain to see that a replacement is not an end but a beginning and to encourage others who are in the process of recovery from their surgeries.

Great posts ladies!  I'm another success story, only one TKR though.  I'm active, can walk 5 miles, 'do' airports and public transport, walk up hills and down.......the list goes on.  Gone are the days of the Blue Badge and struggling with walking more than a hundred yards!  :D :D :D
2001: first referral to OS for osteoarthritis in knees after about 5 years of OA pain.  Told I was too young for knee replacement.
July 2009 Bilateral arthroscopy
Jan 2010 TKR-right knee

Congrats on your knee!!!  They are a life changer and blessing. After so much struggle and pain something beautiful becomes out of it all when you are delighted to walk.
