Confused possible meniscus tear?

I experience a non impact injury on September 11th, I was cutting about to make a tackle and my knee gave out. I could walk, but with a limp and moderate pain. I went to the doctor 3 days later, and he thought my ligaments felt good and due to little swelling and tenderness that I tore my meniscus. I got my mri results back today and all the ligaments look fine, but I had a large bone bruise on the medial side of my knee.'
I have pain on both sides of my knee cap when walking up stairs and pain in the back of my knee. Both my medial and lateral side hurt, and is tender to the touch. He reaper formed all my ligaments tests as my knee has been feeling unstable recently. Everything felt good again, this along with a clean mri he thinks its only a no bruise. Could a bone bruise cause all this or is it a meniscus tear?
Also in class today I was being my knee and when it touches my butt it felt like my shin bone or ligament slides forward, It does this everytime. Is this normal I'm only 15 and still growing?

I am staring physical therapy in 2 days (Wednesday) and if it is just a bone bruise I will be back in 3-4 weeks, but if its something worse i don't want to miss out on potential recovery time. I want to be ready for track season.

Bone bruises can be nasty, nothing 'just' about them - I had a big one in my femoral condyle (along with a meniscus tear and damage to the cartilage too) - can take 3-6 months or longer to heal properly if a bad one
Ice, rest, elevation, minimal impact best
Good luck

Partial meniscectomy, mfx not needed - smooth scar tissue over OC lesion, shaving of lateral aspect of patella - grade III defect
2nd scope on 16/12/10, chondroplasty & Durolane jab
Cartilage damage on femur & tibia
Knee being ignored ;-)

So with all my symptoms you thinks its just a bone bruise? I hope so...
Thanks

I'm not a doctor - I cannot tell you what the issue is from a couple of lines on the Internet (then nor could a doctor) - you said the MRI showed a bone bruise - I was responding to your "if it is
just
a bone bruise" They can be nasty, hurt a lot (especially if under a weight bearing surface) and can take longer than 3-4 weeks to heal. If you run in 3 -4 weeks it may well hurt
The doctor thought it is a meniscus tear, MRI showed not, but MRIs are notoriously poor at showing meniscus tears - follow the doctor's advice, and the physio and see how you go. Meniscus tears often come with pain, swelling, locking of the knee and potentially buckling. They can heal alone depending on where they are - if they are in the bit of the meniscus where there is blood supply.
At 15, you need to take the advice of your doctor, physio, sports teacher, parents.
Good luck

Hi
The doctor says the ligaments are fine, based on examination and MRI, and I note that you do not say what the doctor thought about the meniscus, but what you are describing is continuing instability. The mechanism of your injury is a high risk one for ligament/meniscus tears. Your comment about the shin bone feeling as if it is moving forwards is also a suspicious symptom. If this were my knee I would keep an open mind about things, and look after the knee carefully for the moment and not rush back into sports until you are sure that the instability has cleared up.

My first MRI showed a "possible!" Meniscus tear. I took my chances and tried rehabbing and going back into sport.
1 year on the symptoms persisted and the second MRI showed a definitive and progressed meniscus tear.
I then had surgery and because I waited for so long more meniscus needed to be taken out.
My suggestion is that if after 3 months or so, issues persist - get a second scan / opinion and probably surgery - almost 2 years on from my partial menisectomy, I have no meniscus issues / symptoms!

My doctor's best guess before the mri was a meniscus tear and my mri looked great. I'm just worked that a bone bruise could cause pain and instability in so many places in my knee. My pt that I saw for the first time today thought it could be a meniscus tear and hamstring strain/minor tear. I just don't want to waste 4to 6 weeks on pt and then need surgery. I want to be back for track as I know football is done.
