CPM machine for post-op
« on: September 27, 2012, 07:58:52 PM »
Hi everyone,

i had a PCL, ACL and MCL recon about 5 weeks ago. i was using a CPM machine once a week(30 mins) from the 3rd week of my post-op. i realised how useful it is, i decided to rent one and use it on a regular basis.

the CPM arrived at my house today and was using it for about an hour plus. after the 3rd session of the day, i started to feel an uncomfortable pain in my knee. i dont know what it is. perhaps i was overdo-ing it?

what do you guys think? any advice from the more experience user perhaps?

oh, my ROM from the CPM is 85 so far.

cheers.

i got a cpm about 3 weeks ago and had to work my way up and it seemed to cause me more discomfort than relief if I didn't go down numerous degrees and then work my way back up even from night to day. Try icing it and taking it easy but if you still have pain, don't overdo it. Maybe go back in and see your doc? Good luck and I hope you feel better!

Hi

Yep i concur, don't worry too much you are still early days and we all try to push ourselves a bit too much at times.  Ice-packs and keep off the machine for a few days.

Your rom is getting close to 90 degrees and really if you have some strength in your quads you shouldn't really need the machine to get you any further.  You are better off using your own muscles to get the job done as these machines can make you a bit lazy after a time.

Anyhow, keep going and good luck.

regards

I didn't use a machine at all and as you already know my Doc had me locked out at 0 for the first month after surgery but as I'm learning, there's different protocols for different docs. But even after being locked out at 0 after having my ACL, PCL and MCL replaced with cadaver tendons my ROM was not an issue, I hit 130 after about 4 months. I think it has a lot to do with how good the surgeon is too, because most of the time, it's scar tissue that inhibits your ROM.  Be patient and stay positive, it's the only way to get back from a multi ligament injury. Good luck!!!

4/18/13 Recieved news from Doctor that the ACL and PCL healed well but the MCL did not take. More surgery.

hey,

thanks erin, its been 10 days since i rented the CPM. im on the end of my 6th week post op. i do ice my knee regularly, feels better now. thanks.

yeah youre right SG, reason i had the CPM was cause my OS wanted me to protect my grafts for 6 weeks. no weight bear no active bending. just passive. but yeah, i managed to get it going. now at the end of 6 weeks post op, my ROM on the CPM is 100. its about 78 without the CPM. definitely starting active bending now. thanks for the well wishes.

hey johnny, nice to hear from u. i am trying to be patient. seeing your progress makes me happy. and it gives me some glimmer of hope. esp after seeing your video walking. ;) good luck to you too aye. keep on pushing. you ll be on your bike in no time!

cheers

Thanks, man!!!  I'm glad I can help.  I know getting in contact with others that have recovered from multi ligament injuries have helped me immensely. Their advice is be patient and work hard and keep a positive attitude. You'll get there, man. It just takes time.
