Wound won't close
« on: September 27, 2012, 03:19:12 PM »
I recently had knee surgery and when I went to get the stitches removed today they wound split open again. The nurse just put steri strips on it and sent me on my way.
Is it normal for the wound not to close, I had the stitches in for 2wks and haven't done anything that I shouldn't have. I'm afraid now of infection. Did this ever happen anyone else and should I go and get a different doc to have a look at it?

Is the wound big ? Or is it from a scope ?
Do you have redness and swelling or pain in incision ? Do you have any fluid coming out of it ?
If not I wouldn't worry to much. I have experienced the same and some poking around taking out stitches can make it split up partly.
But keep a close eye on it.
Surgery 6 times left knee torn meniscus, RSDS,chondromalacia, nervdamage cause constant nervpain, chronic inflamm.
Spinaldamage wheeler 100%.
Right knee damaged aug-06, use brace surgery 4/9-07.LCL tear.

As Nettan says, check carefully for signs of infection. I had a foot surgery and my wound was definitely not closed when he "extracted" my stitches at 10 days post op and it did open up in some places. I bought some proper post surgical wound dressings from the chemist and made sure I didn't touch it etc. I was also told to keep it dry at that stage. Just monitor it carefully and if you're worried head back, but don't poke it - tempting, but they need to settle!  :P

Hi

Thanks for the replies. Originally I was meant to have surgery by scope but when I came round from the op I was told he had to make larger incisions to do what he needed to do. Since I posted last I've been back to my g.p and have been given antibiotics. The wound became very red and painful. I am on the antibiotic a couple of days now but still have a lot of pain. I am getting the wound checked everyday by the nurse in the g.p's practice and she says its looking better so i'm assuming the pain i'm feeling now is from the surgery. I'm hoping that will start to ease soon

Thanks again for the replies
