Left knee replacement 9-27-12
« on: September 27, 2012, 12:28:14 AM »
So tomorrow (9-27-12) is the day. Hope this knee replacement is better than the right one (had two on the right knee, was never right, still isn't). Left knee is so bad, I am now knock-kneed. OS warned me of more complications because of that. All I know is I can't stand long enough to do the everyday things like brush my teeth, take a shower, etc. So this better work now. I figure to have a stay in a rehab center after this, too.

Hi Eileen,

I just want to wish you all the very best of good luck for tomorrow and I hope it goes better than your last one, which I am sure it will.
When you can't even brush your teeth or take a shower you KNOW it's time for a TKR.
Hopefully, by this time tomorrow you will have had breakfast and will be looking forward to the journey to a pain free life.

Cheers, Martin ;)

Don't listen to Martin. By this time you will probably be sat in bed with pain all over, a massive bandage on your leg and feeling so bad that you think you'll never walk again - only joking honest!

You may feel like the above initially but it won't be long until you start to feel much better and cam look forward to recovery and getting your life back.

I'm sure you know from your 2 on the right knee that it will take time and probably some tough times, but you'll eventually feel much better.

Good luck, hope it has gone OK and keep us informed on your rehab.

OS told me he fixed the knock-knee, I do not have drop-foot, which was one of the biggest complications. Still in the hospital ... boy, they really work you over here .. two PT sessions daily. I have my straight leg down to 1 degree, which is excellent, although it hurts like hell. My flexion is 75, up from 65 in the morning.

Good job Eileen!  I know it's tough, the first two weeks or so are the hardest but little by little you will get back to feeling like you're human again...

Great to hear you already doing so well with the ROM.  With the extra PT in the rehab center you hopefully should really get it all back a little sooner, especially since you are a pro at all of this.  Maybe this will  be an opportunity to get extra attention to your other knee as well.

Good healing :)

Got down to 0 on the straightened leg, 90 on the bent leg yesterday. Off to rehab center today. I hope by going to rehab I can get better therapy than I did with home therapy on the first knee.

Doing OK but wound up not going to rehab; insurance decided I was too healthy to go to a skilled nursing facility. In the meantime, I have developed edema in both legs (which I had from my right knee TKR). My left leg is a lovely shade of purplish/red.

But I was healthy enough to go home on my own. I do have in-home PT and nurses coming in, however.

Hi Eileen,

I always thought the purplish/red was much more becoming than the later mix of yellowish/green with occasional purple centers, but everyone has colors that suit them better. ;D  Seriously, I'm sure it must be tough when you expect to be taken care of and haven't gotten things done ahead the way you would have had you known.  And I think the bruising is worse pain than the knee itself.   I can only hope your recovery goes as well as mine have-you'll be up and going crazy from cabin fever in no time!

Sorry to hear about the edema.  Those compression hose sometimes just can't do the job you need.  I usually make a blanket wedge that goes from my hips to the end of the bed and is about 8 inches raised at the foot so you can roll over on your side and still have your legs elevated.  I used 4 pillows in the recliner to get extra lift there too, but I had phlebitis this fall and had to have my feet up and off work for a week and my doctor said that wasn't enough.  He insisted that I be flat on my back, not just reclining, and have my feet up about a foot above my body.  It really did the job on the swelling.   I can also recommend doing lymphatic massage, slow gentle strokes upward toward the groin for about 0-15 minutes at a time.  It helps fluid move back up out of your legs. You might want to ask the PT to do it or at least to show you how.

Hope you are feeling better soon. :)
