Help me decipher the MRI report please.
« on: September 25, 2012, 09:06:31 PM »
Hi I have been having problems with the inside of my right knee for about a year now.... so I finally went to a doctor, and he said its most likely a problem with my meniscus but to be 100% sure he sent me to get an MRI. I got my test results and i dont understand it. Such as how serious it is... it has gotten to the point were my knee locks up and gives out, sometimes i fall. I am only 15 years old, the problem probally started because of running a lot (track team) but i have gotten 2, 2 month rests and it didn't help at all, and its getting worse.

"Findings:
There is irregularity of the free edge at the junction of the body and anterior horn of the medial meniscus consistent with a small free edge tear.

Minimal synovitis is present within the knee joint.  There is also mild reactive bone marrow edema between the tibial tuberosity.   A 2.4 x 0.5 x 1.1 cm osteochondral lesion is present on the weightbearing surface of the medial femoral condyle with associated bone marrow edema.

A small nonspecific lesion measuring about 0.8 cm is present in the soft tissues adjacent to the posterior aspect of the medial femoral condyle near the origin of the medial head of the gastrocnemius muscle probably representing a small cyst.

Impression:
Small free edge tear at the junction of the body and anterior horn of the medial meniscus.
Osteochondral lesion on the weightbearing surface of the medial femoral condyle without MR evidence for instability.
No evidence for full thickness cartilage defects.
Small lesion probably representing a small ganglion cyst near the origin of the medial head of the gastrocnemius muscle."

I am talking with my doctor again later this week i just wanted to have a little better understanding of it all, because i am really anxious i have no idea what to expect

Thank you all help is appreciated.

The MRI report below indeed indicates a tear of the medial (inside) meniscus and the locking and buckling is indicative of the torn bit getting caught in the joint.  Unfortunately, meniscus tears aren't very good at healing as there isn't much blood supply and given you've had the symptoms a year, it is unlikely to get better - probably need surgery to repair or trim it back if irrepairable.  There is a very good meniscus section in the Information Hub bit of the site.  I had a lateral tear too, tried physio forn 5 months, got worse, had surgery, no more locking and buckling (and I an rather older than you) :)

You also sound to have a small defect in the articular cartilage (think the shiny stuff on a chicken bone, helps the bones move) - luckily it's not full thinkness through to the bone, hopefully it'll settle down with time once the meniscus tear is dealt with :)

The cyst is possibly caused by the meniscus tear and should go away again

Hopefully that helps for when you talk to the doctor.  Good luck, make sure you / your parents ask questions.  Being young you should heal up well if you do need an operation :)
Came off bike onto concrete 9/9/09
LK arthroscopy 8/2/10
Partial meniscectomy, mfx not needed - smooth scar tissue over OC lesion, shaving of lateral aspect of patella - grade III defect
2nd scope on 16/12/10, chondroplasty & Durolane jab
Cartilage damage on femur & tibia
Knee being ignored ;-)
