ACL + hamstring graft/medial meniscus repair question
« on: September 21, 2012, 02:12:52 PM »
Hey guys,

I am 2 weeks and 2 days post op from surgery. I saw my PT on Wednesday. He said I was way ahead of the game. I am supposed to be no weight bearing because of the meniscus repair for 3 weeks, then 3 more weeks in a locked brace. I can already get full extension and I can get my degrees flexion, although I am not supposed to go past that for 5 weeks.

On Tuesday morning I woke up and noticed I was pretty tight. I sat down and started to stretch and noticed some minor pain when I went to extend in my hamstring. I got to full extension after stretching a minute or so. Wednesday morning was about the same. At PT, I did some hamstring curls which I have been doing at home for the last week everyday. Nothing new. I noticed a little intensified pain, but assumed it was OK because the hamstring curls have been the hardest exercise, given the weakness of my hamstring.

Wednesday night came and I started experiencing a lot of what feels like hamstring tightness and soreness, as well as joint soreness. I had to get up at 3am that night and ice and take some meds, which is the only time that has happened. I woke up and can still get full extension but it hurts the entire time. Once I get extended, it hurts to pull out of extension. Its mainly hamstring pain but also on the inside of my knee. It also hurts to extend and roll my knee inside or outside, like its pulling different muscles. I feel this has been gradual until after my PT, but started before I went to PT. I don't remember anything specific that happened that could have injured anything.

Any advice? Is this common? Did I overdo my hamstring and pull it? It doesn't feel like only my hamstring, but that is that main pain. Any info would be great? Btw, swelling is about the same as always still.

Nate

Hi Nate,

don't worry too much especially if you have a physio watching out for you as well.

Your hamstring has also been through the mill when they removed part of the tendons. It takes time to heal and repair as well. I think those of us who have been through the hamstring grafts have all experienced this at some stage or another.

Be guided by your physio and make sure that they are aware of all the movements that are causing you to have increased pain. Especially show them how you were doing the hamstring curls, as it may be that you are not doing them quite right for the stage of your rehab that you are at. Be careful to ice them as well as your knee after activity as well..

Think of your hammies having had a major tear and treat them accordingly - hamstring tears take a lot of time and TLC to heal, so cut yourself a wee bit of slack here - just because you are up on the game with your ACL you may be neglecting to take care of your hammies!

Welcome to the Nuthouse community by the way!

Thanks for the comments. It is almost like I digress to about 5 days after surgery. I couldn't even do some of my PT at home today again because of the pain. I called my OS nurse and briefly explained and she acted like it was all no big deal. I guess I don't understand how I can go from little pain for 2 weeks and moving along with my PT and now feel like I can hardly do the things I have already been doing for two weeks. I guess ill are what happens over the weekend. I see my main PT guy on Wednesday.
